Purpose, Mission, and Membership

The Northern Michigan Master Gardener Association (NMMGA) is primarily organized for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes.

This non-profit group:

  • Educates adults and youth in horticulture science,

  • Educates communities about environmentally sound practices through horticulture-based activities,

  • Promotes nutritious food security; and

  • Improves the aesthetics of our community.

This organization of volunteers is affiliated and aligned with the Michigan Master Gardener Association.

The list of activities on this website illustrates the dedication and the wide variety of interests of our members as they carry out the mission. For example, our members volunteer at school-based gardens to pass on knowledge to students, faith-based gardens that donate the harvest to food pantries, farmer markets to share fact sheets published by Michigan State University Extension and travel to Mackinac Island to support the Lilac Festival. In addition to those types of activities, some members serve as liaisons to county and local park & recreation committees.

We welcome certified master gardeners and master gardener trainees to join us in this social and service organization. Additionally, we offer an associate membership to master gardeners that have lapsed in certification but wish to continue volunteer work in this field and hang out with other master gardeners.

We are proud of our education program that is open to members and their friends. The members are offered continuing education hours on a variety of topics and field trips to interesting locations.
